“I know someone who kisses the way

a flower opens, but more rapidly.

Flowers are sweet.  They have

short, beatific lives.  They offer

much pleasure. There is

nothing in the world that can be said against them.

Sad, isn’t it, that all they can kiss

is the air.

Yes, yes!  We are the lucky ones.”  –Mary Oliver

would lead. No, I don’t intend to turn back.” –Mary Oliver

“I did think, let’s go about this slowly.

This is important.  This should take

some really deep thought.  We should take

small thoughtful steps.

But, bless us, we didn’t.”  –Mary Oliver

of someone you love,

including all its expressions

in privacy and in public,

trees, I think,

are the most beautiful

forms on earth.

Though, admittedly,

if this were a contest,

the trees would come in

an extremely distant second.” –Mary Oliver

“I have refused to live

locked in the orderly house of

reason and proofs.

The world I live in and believe in

is wider than that. And anyway

what’s wrong with Maybe?

You wouldn’t believe what once or

twice I’ve seen.  I’ll just

tell you this:

Only if there are angels in your head will you

ever, possibly, see one.”  –Mary Oliver

When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me, and daily.

I am so distant from the hope of myself,
in which I have goodness, and discernment,
and never hurry through the world
but walk slowly, and bow often.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves
and call out, “Stay awhile.”
The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, “It’s simple,” they say,
“and you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled
with light, and to shine.” –Mary Oliver
